Wait, what?! I’m not sure I wrote that correctly?! But truth, my littlest is 6 months old. If you’re a mom reading this then you get it…you blink and time goes by in an instant. Time is such a thief in that way. It’s like you want so much for them to learn the next thing or reach the next milestone but then you crave the time or stage before…anyways, I digress…
Arlo has brought more joy to our family than I even imagined possible. I was so anxious leading up to delivery & if I’m being honest – I thought “how will this change the bond I have with Clyde?”, “how will this change my marriage?”, “Do I have the capacity to love another as much as Clyde?” …I mean I went through the laundry list of concerns and being on the other side, I can honestly share that…
Clyde has become an amazing big brother. He told me his favorite part of the summer at the beach was “playing with Arlo” – I mean, heart melted. So no, it didn’t change the bond I have with Clyde and I can see now that I gave him the greatest gift: a built in playmate & brother. I can also whole heartedly say that Arlo changed my marriage in the best way possible. Having Arlo was one of the best things to happen to our marriage. He reminded us to remember the most important in life and for us, that is family. Keep in mind that Arlo also came the same week that COVID shelter in place became in effect so we really had a lot of family bonding time and it was exactly what we needed.
Arlo is doing great. He is the happiest guy, thinks his big brother is hilarious and lights up every time my husband walks into the room. He is also sleeping great thanks to the help of Erin Reed (@mrserinmcreed) who literally saved my life. We started sleep training at 4mo. and I can’t say enough good things. Arlo sleeps straight through the night 11-12 hours, naps 3 times a day, and let’s just say that when he sleeps, he’s happier & we’re all sane.
Here’s a quick glimpse at Arlo’s schedule:
6:30am wake up & feed (I’m exclusively breastfeeding at this point, more on my breastfeeding journey on another post)
8:30am nap #1. This nap usually lasts about an hour depending on how his night sleep went.
9:30am feed, play, back down for nap #2 around 11:30am, which is sometimes longer around 1.5-2hrs
1:30pm feed, play & eat “lunch” which is usually a fruit or veggie that I’ve made for him.
3:30pm nap #3 which is a quicker nap and lasts about 30-40min. Once he wakes, I’ll feed & he’ll have his dinner, bath and wind down for the day.
Bedtime is anywhere between 5:30pm-6:30pm based on how he napped earlier in the day. I have to say, this was a game changer for us. It has been instrumental in his sleeping!
Must Have’s of the moment:
Okay for starters, no baby is alike so keep that in mind. With that being said…
To get Arlo to sleep in the first 3 months, we used the Snoo. In the newborn stage, it worked great but once babies can reach the age of sleep training (4mo), then I recommend training more than anything else. We rented the snoo and only used until Arlo was 3 months old. We truthfully didn’t intend to use it that long but with my husband taking over the nursery as an in-home office during COVID shutdown, the snoo became necessary.
We now love the BIBS pacifiers. Clyde did NOT take a pacifier and Arlo was really hit or miss with it. He took one initially, then refused them, but now takes one for sleep. Don’t know what that’s about but I’m grateful for them at the moment. We love BIBS because they actually stay in his mouth.
Both of my boys are BIG so clothing that has a more generous fit is key. We love Hanna Andersson, especially for pajamas. They wash super well & I really love that I can get matching jammies for both boys.
And for travel, the ergo baby is my go-to carrier. I’ve used this for both boys and love it. We actually lost the one we used with Clyde somewhere along the lines (probably when we moved to Cali), but thanks to my MIL, we now have another one! I’ve figured out how to nurse in it also. Win Win. And when it comes to travel systems, we use the UppaBaby Mesa car seat & Vista stroller.
Arlo rolls but only when he really wants to. He seems quite content just on his belly or back and rotates himself when needed – ha! He also can sit up unassisted to play with his toys. He loves anything he can put in his mouth because his two bottom teeth are through the gums – ah!
Food: I think I should make a whole new post on this BUT, he loves loves loves to eat! Definitely a Gable. His favorites thus far have been sweet potatoes, apple sauce & peas. Least favorites have been carrots.
He chats up a storm and laughs hysterically which is the BEST THING EVER. We feel so lucky that he’s ours. Our blue eyed cutie that has brought us so much joy! In closing, I should say that going from 1 to 2 is hard but once you’re in the chaos, you’re just in it so embrace it. Enjoy the ride.
